We already have some exciting projects in the works for 2016. We’re brewing 15 gallons of beer for the Monroe County Humane Association’s 60th anniversary party on April 23. And once again we’ll be partnering with Upland Brewing Co. to create some distinctive homebrews for the annual UpCup homebrew competition in May.
Three Hop Jockeys hauled their kegs up to Sugar Creek Hops for Brew-B-Q, the annual gathering of Indiana homebrewers. Rod Myers (left) served a Belgian Dubbel, Jason Mundy (center) served a Hefeweizen, and Mike Kersulov served an Apple Cider and a Grapefruit Ale. The event, organized and hosted by Ron Smith and the Foam Blowers of Indianapolis (FBI), included an impressive spread of pulled pork, side dishes, a plenty of homebrew.
We set up at the Bloomington Farmers’ Market in April to demonstrate homebrewing and were interviewed by Annie Corrigan for Indiana Public Media’s “Earth Eats” program/podcast/blog. Here’s the segment featuring Mike Kersulov and Jason Mundy.
Several Hop Jockeys attended this year’s Brewers’ Cup at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and two of them went home with ribbons. Jason Mundy earned 3rd place for “One Ticket,” an Ordinary Bitter (BJCP category 8A). Rod Myers took 2nd place for “Chiportle,” a chipotle porter in the Spice/Herb/Vegetable category (21A). Rod’s “Weizenheimer,” a Weizenbock (15C) went to mini Best of Show and received an honorable mention.
“Weizenheimer” went on to win 1st place in the Wheat category at the Jasper Strassenfest homebrew competition, sponsored by the Dubois County Suds Club.
Hop Jockeys Abel Garcia, Handsome Bob, and Rod Myers served their homebrew at this year’s GnawBrew Beer, Art, and Music Festival. Rod’s “r00b,” a rhubarb saison, won 3rd place overall in the homebrew competition. See Adam Schick’s account of the festival at the IndianaOnTap.com blog.
This Saturday (April 4) several members of Hop Jockeys will demonstrate homebrewing at the outdoor Bloomington Farmers’ Market beginning at 9:00am. We will demonstrate both all-grain and extract brewing techniques and answer questions about homebrewing. Stop by to check it out and support your local homebrew club! #homebrew #hopjockeys
For this year’s UpCup (April 25), Upland Brewing will be providing each participating member of Hop Jockeys with 5 gallons of Belgian Wit wort. The homebrewer will then do whatever he/she wants with it—pitch a favorite yeast, triple dry hop it, throw some bourbon-soaked oak in there, etc. —then package it and take it to UpCup to serve to attendees.
Wort distribution will be at the Profile brewery (4060 Profile Pkwy.) on Tuesday, March 24, with exact times yet to be determined. You must be a dues-paying member to participate, and we will be providing a list to Upland. So if you want to join in on the fun and haven’t paid your dues, contact our treasurer ASAP!
Happy fermenting, Hop Jockeys!
